Astrology: How Your Energy Expresses Itself Through the Zodiac Signs
When most people first discover astrology, they usually start with their Sun sign.
“I’m a Virgo.”
“I’m a Sagittarius.”
“I’m a Scorpio.”
But your signs are doing far more than simply labeling your personality.
Because in astrology, the signs are not the what.
They are the how.
In my last blog, I wrote about the planets and the ‘what’ they are bringing into your life.
This week, we are looking at the ‘how’. This is discerned by where the planets are placed.
Remember that Astrological recipe that we started with?
Planet = what
Sign = how
House = where
The planet shows what part of you is expressing.
The sign shows how it expresses itself.
The house shows where that energy tends to play out in your life.
Learning the Signs:
The signs describe the style, flavour, energy, and expression through which different parts of you move through the world.
The Signs: The Energy Behind the Expression
If the planets are the characters in your chart… the signs are the costumes, personalities, and emotional tones those characters wear.
The signs influence how each planetary energy expresses itself.
For example:
A Cancer Moon feels emotions very differently to an Aquarius Moon.
A Leo Mercury communicates differently to a Virgo Mercury.
A Taurus Mars takes action differently to an Aries Mars.
Same planet.
Different expression.
This is why two people with the same Sun sign can feel completely different.
Because astrology is never just one placement.
It is the combination of planets, signs, houses, and aspects working together.
The Signs Are Archetypes
Each zodiac sign carries its own energetic blueprint.
Each one has strengths.
Each one has shadows.
Each one has gifts it is here to embody and lessons it is here to learn.
Aries teaches courage and initiation.
Taurus teaches grounding and self-worth.
Gemini teaches curiosity and communication.
Cancer teaches emotional depth and nurturing.
Leo teaches self-expression and heart-led leadership.
Virgo teaches refinement, devotion, and growth.
And every sign has both a high road and low road expression.
The high road is what happens when the energy is conscious, embodied, and aligned.
The low road is what happens when the energy moves through fear, wounding, conditioning, or unconscious patterns.
For example:
A high road Leo radiates warmth, generosity, and creative confidence.
A low road Leo may seek validation, attention, or external approval.
A high road Virgo brings discernment, wisdom, and service.
A low road Virgo can become hypercritical, perfectionistic, or anxious.
Neither is “good” or “bad.”
They are simply different expressions of the same energy.

Each sign has a high and low road expression: high road, when you’re in alignment, low road when you are in stress or shadow.

Why Understanding Your Signs Changes Everything
When you begin understanding the signs in your chart, you stop taking parts of yourself so personally.
You realise:
Your sensitivity is not weakness.
Your intensity is not “too much.”
Your need for freedom is not wrong.
Your desire for depth, connection, security, adventure, or meaning all have energetic roots.
Astrology gives language to patterns that many people have felt their entire lives but never fully understood.
And often, the things you judge most harshly within yourself are simply the unintegrated expression of your energy.
The goal is not to become a “perfect” version of your signs.
The goal is awareness.
Because awareness creates choice.
The Signs Are Meant to Evolve
One of the biggest misconceptions in astrology is that your chart is fixed.
It’s not.
Your natal chart shows your natural wiring - your tendencies, patterns, gifts, and growth edges.
But how consciously you live those energies?
That evolves over a lifetime.
This is why astrology can become such a powerful tool for growth.
It helps you notice when you are operating from fear, survival, people pleasing, perfectionism, avoidance, or emotional reactivity…
And gently guides you back toward alignment.
Not by becoming someone else.
But by becoming more fully yourself.
Next up: The Houses
If the planets are the “what” of your chart…
And the signs are the “how”…
Then the houses reveal where those energies tend to unfold in your life.
They show the areas of life your soul is here to experience, grow through, and evolve within.
And this is where your chart shifts from abstract personality traits… into a living, breathing map of your life.
